How to use BTi

ANALYSING COMMODITIES AND CURRENCIES

Prices, commercial trader positioning and seasonality reveal different aspects of the same market. BTi brings them together to help you build a more complete analytical picture and identify conditions that deserve closer attention.

The principle

DON'T JUST LOOK AT PRICE LEVELS. EXAMINE WHO IS POSITIONING BEHIND THE PRICE AND WHETHER HISTORICAL TIMING ALIGNS.

BTi combines price behaviour with commercial trader positioning and seasonal analysis, providing a more structured interpretation than price charts alone.

THREE ANALYTICAL DIMENSIONS, ONE MARKET CONTEXT

Price tells you what is happening. COT data provides insight into how certain professional participants directly connected with physical markets or production are positioned. Seasonality adds a time dimension. BTi combines these factors to make the analysis easier to interpret.

01 · Start with price

PRICE IS THE STARTING POINT, NOT THE CONCLUSION

The first question is straightforward: what is the market doing? Trends, accelerating movements, periods of weakness and price behaviour relative to history provide the first layer of analysis.

BTi uses price as a starting point but does not stop there. The insight comes from comparing market behaviour with information that the price chart alone cannot reveal.

Price behaviour describes the market, but does not by itself explain what lies behind a move.
02 · Commercial trader positioning

SEE WHAT MARKET PARTICIPANTS DIRECTLY CONNECTED TO THE PHYSICAL MARKET ARE DOING

The Commitments of Traders (COT) report provides information on the positioning of different groups of participants in futures markets. BTi focuses particularly on commercial traders: companies, producers, users and other participants whose positions may also reflect the needs of their underlying businesses.

Rather than considering the absolute number of contracts alone, BTi analyses commercial positioning against its historical range, making it easier to distinguish normal behaviour from unusually extreme positions.

Producers and commercial traders Participants directly involved in producing, consuming or hedging the underlying commodity.
Historical positioning Positioning is assessed against past behaviour, not as an isolated figure.
Accumulation Periods in which commercial positioning becomes relatively more favourable.
Selling pressure Periods in which commercial positioning becomes relatively weaker.
03 · Price / commercial trader divergence

IDENTIFY WHEN PRICES AND COMMERCIAL TRADERS ARE TELLING DIFFERENT STORIES

One of BTi's distinctive features is the COT Divergence Index, a proprietary indicator designed to measure the difference between price behaviour and commercial trader positioning.

When prices continue to move in one direction while commercial positioning develops differently, a divergence may emerge that warrants closer investigation. The indicator makes this relationship easier to interpret and compare over time.

04 · Add seasonality

THE MARKET SETUP MAY BE INTERESTING. BUT TIMING MATTERS TOO.

Many commodities exhibit recurring patterns linked to production cycles, supply, demand and seasonal factors. BTi provides seasonal analysis both cumulatively and month by month.

This allows you to assess whether the period under review has historically exhibited recurring characteristics and to use seasonality as additional context, rather than an isolated signal.

Cumulative seasonality Examine historical behaviour throughout the annual cycle.
Monthly analysis Explore historical behaviour during the current or a future month.
Historical patterns Identify periods showing more statistically recurrent behaviour.
Timing Add a time dimension to your interpretation of prices and COT data.
05 · Look for convergence

INSIGHT EMERGES WHEN SEVERAL FACTORS POINT TO A CONSISTENT PICTURE

A single data point is rarely enough. Extreme commercial positioning may be noteworthy, but becomes more informative when considered alongside price behaviour, any divergence and the seasonal context.

BTi brings these factors into a common analytical framework, helping you distinguish an isolated signal from a situation in which several factors converge.

06 · Focus your attention

CUT THROUGH THE NOISE AND INVESTIGATE MARKETS WITH MORE RELEVANT CONDITIONS

The aim is not to turn a market setup automatically into a trade, but to help distinguish ordinary conditions from situations where price, positioning and seasonality suggest further investigation may be worthwhile.

You can therefore devote more time to markets exhibiting characteristics that are more significant under BTi's analytical criteria.
